Chùteau Haut-Bages-Libéral was founded by the prominent Libéral family in the 18th century on some of the most distinct terroir in the Pauillac appellation, close to the Gironde estuary, which helps protect the vines from frost and severe weather. By the mid-nineteenth century the estate was widely accepted as being amongst the best in the region and was classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 classification. Today, the 30ha estate is run by the third generation of the Merlaut family- Claire Villars-Lurton. Chùteau Haut-Bages-Libéral has been certified in Organic Agriculture since 2019 and is in conversion to biodynamics.
